Poker is a card game where each player puts in a sum of money, called the pot. They then bet against other players, hoping to win the highest five-card hand. The dealer deals each player two cards, then places three additional cards on the table that are community cards for everyone to use (this is called the flop). The final betting round is then conducted and the player with the best five-card hand wins the pot.

There’s more to poker than just knowing the rules; you have to be able to read the other players at the table. This can be a major factor in winning or losing. If you can figure out the other players’ emotions, then you can adjust your own strategy accordingly. For example, if you see that someone is nervous before a flop, then you might want to fold if you don’t have a good hand.

If you do decide to call a raise, then you have to know how much your own hand is worth. You should calculate the odds of your winning hand by adding up all the different ways that you can improve your hand. For instance, an eight can give you a pair of kings or make it a straight, while another eight could turn your pair into a full house.

It’s also important for the dealer to be able to distribute the money that each player has put into the pot correctly. If the dealer accidentally puts all of the winning player’s chips into a side pot, then that can throw off the entire game.
