The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that may be played in many different ways. Regardless of the variation, all games involve betting between players and a showdown to determine who has the best hand. Most poker games use a standard 52-card deck, with the cards being ranked (from high to low) Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3. Some games will also include one or more wild cards or jokers.

The first round of betting begins once all players have received their 2 hole cards. Usually, there are two mandatory bets called blinds made by the players to the left of the dealer. This creates a pot to win and gives players an incentive to play.

During each betting interval, players can choose to call the bet (match it) or raise it by putting in more than the previous player’s total bet amount. They can also fold, which means they put down their cards and forfeit the pot.

Once everyone has placed their bets, a final showdown is held and the highest hand wins. The highest hand is usually a pair of distinct cards, but in some cases the rules might specify that it has to be a higher-ranked pair, a straight, or even a full house. In the case of ties, the high card breaks the tie.
