Poker is a card game played by two or more players. It is a game of skill, luck and psychology. The object of the game is to win a pot (representing money) by placing bets before and during the betting rounds. The game may be played with anywhere from 2 to 14 players. In most forms of the game, one player must place a forced bet (usually an ante or blind) before the first betting round. Cards are then dealt, face-up or face-down, and the first player to act places a bet. After a number of betting rounds, the cards are revealed and the best hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
It is important to study your opponents. Look for tells, such as a slight smile, the hand covering the mouth or shaking the hands, a glance at the flop and intensely staring at other players, or a sudden, nervous tilt of the head or body. A throbbing pulse can also be an indication of strong holdings or a bluff.<\/p>\n
Try to determine the type of player – conservative or aggressive – you are playing against. Conservative players are usually risk-averse, and will often fold their hands early on.
